Our utilities team has extensive experience in fibre and data, which has recently been demonstrated through a secondment with leading rural broadband provider Gigaclear. Associate Director James Wadland, based at our Banbury office, was recently working at Gigaclear’s Abingdon office three days a week as a network access manager.
Gigaclear is dedicated to delivering broadband to poorly connected rural communities across the UK, investing in the building of a state-of-the-art fibre network to provide reliable internet access. The company required someone with extensive experience in land access rights to help support with the rollout of fibre broadband infrastructure across six regions. The senior role also involved managing a team of 40 colleagues, staff training, data analysis, implementing new processes and liaising with external stakeholders.
James had the knowledge and experience to step into the temporary position, which was providing maternity cover for seven months. He said: “Gigaclear is a rapidly growing company, so it has been an exciting and busy time. The role has enabled me to develop new skills and build on my existing knowledge base. I have also built more contacts in the industry. I acted as the link between the network access teams and senior leadership, analysing regional performance, reporting, and developing ways to improve the working model to strive for efficiency.
“One of the principal projects I supported was the market town transformation, developing the consents process for Physical Infrastructure Access (PIA) which is a new build methodology, and the subsequent training of my team. Working with various departments at Gigaclear has improved my awareness and the importance of team working and communication. I am excited to build on these attributes and others that I have learnt whilst at Gigaclear to improve future work at Fisher German.
