Applications open on Monday 26 June for our Insight Programme which starts in September 2023. This fully virtual programme is aimed at students not reading a property-related subject at university and looking to know more about surveying or planning.

The programme is designed primarily to provide a foundation to build an understanding of services and careers within the planning and surveying industry. By generating interest from a broader candidate pool, our programme enables us to grow and diversify our talent pipeline outside of the usual cognate university students.

Brogan Fodczuk, our Early Careers Talent Advisor, said: “We found that many of the non-cognate students our panels interviewed for graduate roles were extremely talented but struggled to articulate their career aspirations due to limited knowledge. Our Insight Programme intends to provide individuals with an opportunity to get a real understanding while at the same time enabling us to spot talent and get a good grasp of the non-cognate graduate market.”

The programme is intended to be as interactive and engaging as possible. It will include presentations and talks, personal development training, group and individual tasks, and access to a buddy to make it a meaningful and enriching professional work experience. The five days are all delivered virtually so students from anywhere in the UK can attend.

For each sector, the participants can take part in team tasks and activities such as preparing a rent review for commercial premises, putting together a residential sales brochure, creating an illustrative master plan of a site, and looking at options for a barn conversion.

There are also individual tasks aimed at encouraging the participants to reflect on their understanding, personal preferences, and skills to help them determine what they’re good at, what they like most and what they want to achieve in their careers. Finally, to help them apply for surveying placements and jobs in the future, we help them improve their interview and CV writing skills.

Brogan added: “We have had some great feedback from those attending our Insight Programme in April. Some were initially interested in a property career but were unsure of the roles within the different sectors. The programme shows them how varied and different the sectors are and will hopefully empower them to define their career goals. Four participants from previous programmes have now been offered graduate roles and five others subsequently secured a summer placement with us, which shows it has supported some to take the next step in their career path.”

Rose Trafford, one of the students who attended said: “The Insight Programme was fantastic, it allowed me to listen and get involved in sector talks from industry professionals. I was able to learn more about each sector in more detail and I now realise that I would be more suited to a career in a planning role as opposed to a surveying role which was quite eye-opening for me.”

Harriet Coupe, who completed the Insight Programme and has since joined us as a graduate surveyor in our minerals department, said: “I thought the Insight Programme was invaluable in helping me to gain a thorough understanding of the different industry sectors and finding out what the surveyors within those different sectors do in their day-to-day work. It was also a great opportunity to find out more about Fisher German as a company and be able to talk with people across the business about what they do, which helped me to inform my own career decisions. I'd recommend the Insight Programme to anyone who wants to know more about the property industry.”

The programme will run for five days from 11-15 September 2023. To apply, CVs need to be submitted with a cover letter via our website stating why you wish to attend our programme and what you’re hoping to gain from it. Applications close at 4pm on Friday 28 July 2023.
