One of Fisher German’s surveyors has been ‘sent to Coventry’ for a year – all in the name of excellent client service. Scott Howard, who works in our Utilities and Infrastructure team, has just celebrated 12 months acting as estates surveyor for Cadent, which manages UK's biggest gas distribution network. But rather than servicing the client from his office at Market Harborough, Scott spends three days a week at Cadent’s headquarters in Coventry looking after all aspects of the company’s commercial property holdings.

Cadent manages a network of more than 80,000 miles of pipes which transport gas to 11 million customers across the UK. The network is serviced through offices and depots across the country. Cadent has been a client of ours since 2017, post its acquisition from National Grid Gas Distribution Limited and Scott made the move to work at their Coventry base 12 months ago.

He said: “The arrangement has worked really well and being embedded here at Cadent means I am very much a part of its team and that makes delivering our service so much more efficient. I started by assisting the in-house estates surveyor, but now I’ve grown into performing that role allowing them to immerse themselves in managing a major project. Cadent has around half a dozen offices and 70 depots across country and I undertake all the commercial property work such as rent reviews, lease renewals and finding new sites.

During the year I have been based here, we have acquired two new sites and have three in solicitors’ hands. Those new sites are needed to fulfil the ambitions of an emerging depot strategy or to replace sites that have succumbed to redevelopment pressures. The work is really varied so to be here working inside Cadent with face to face access to people really helps us deliver the service as efficiently as possible and works very well. On a personal level it has also been great for my development. Fisher German is a great company to work for but being at Cadent also gives me first-hand insight to the needs and requirements of a client which I think helps me in other work.”

Scott joined Fisher German in 2017 after graduating from Harper Adams. He is a member of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors and a fellow of the Central Association of Agricultural Valuers.

Leo Conway, estates surveyor from Cadent said: “Cadent have worked with Fisher German for a number of years and having Scott in our offices at Coventry, working with the property team, has definitely been beneficial. “Scott has been able to work very closely with the team, as part of the team, to deliver some challenging projects and the close working relationship he has been able to develop has worked well.”
