One of our young infrastructure surveyors who got into the profession after completing our Insight outreach programme is now making a name for herself in the industry after an insightful presentation on green projects at a major competition with the Pipeline Industries Guild (PIG).

Graduate Surveyor, Jasmine Krishan, presented at the Sir John Parker paper competition organised by the PIG’s Midlands Branch Professional Development Network (PDN). The competition gives young professionals in the utilities and infrastructure industry an opportunity to give topical and interesting presentations related to the work they do every day.

Jasmine’s presentation was based on her experiences on projects for Cadent and National Grid and how landowners react to the nature of the work being done on their land. She said: “While the technical side of major infrastructure projects is important in getting them delivered, the interaction with landowners is equally important. Landowners may be more sympathetic to greener projects built on their land even though the potential disruption is the same.

“For example, the work I’ve done on sustainable projects in the north west suggests this might be the case, landowners seem to have been much more sympathetic to low-carbon projects in general. With other projects I’ve worked on for oil and natural gas pipelines, landowners have sometimes been more reluctant to agree terms and more negotiation has occasionally been needed.

“Our industry needs to explore these attitudes further if we are to deliver some of the ambitious projects required to meet net-zero targets. If landowners are more likely to be agreeable to greener projects, this could mean the scope of the projects could be widened in the design stage compared to more traditional infrastructure installations.”

Jasmine joined us in September 2022 after completing our ‘Insight’ programme, a one-week, virtual course which gives undergraduates with an interest in surveying or planning an overview of the basics to help them make further career decisions.

She added: “Surveying wasn’t something I considered as an undergraduate – I took politics and economics at Reading University. I had heard of Fisher German through friends I knew who worked there, so I looked them up and came across the Insight programme.

“It was really interesting and once I completed the programme, I was offered an interview and managed to get the job. The team has been supportive since I joined and encouraged me to enter the Sir John Parker competition after many achieved success at the early stages of their careers. It was fantastic to present at the Midlands branch competition and make valuable connections within the industry.”

Partner, Rachel Bridge who works in our Infrastructure Services Division said: “It’s fantastic to see programmes like our Insight programme unearthing new talent, our graduates are given real client-facing work from the start which enables them to build their confidence and gain experience in the industry very quickly. We have a highly successful graduate training programme which is aimed at giving driven individuals the best start in their careers, to become a finalist at a PIG competition is a great achievement for Jasmine.”
