Summer lunch article JHG 1

Some events come and go. Others become part of a firm’s story.

What began in 1994 as a simple thank you to clients, a table for 10 at Langan’s Brasserie, has grown into a long-standing and much-loved annual event, now welcoming more than 128 guests. Over the decades, it has moved through some iconic venues, from Quaglino’s, The Canteen and Simpsons on the Strand, to more than a decade each at the original West Street Ivy and the OXO Tower, followed by City Social and, in recent years, 14 Stories. With the exception of 2020, it has run every year since it began. This year’s event took place on Thursday 11 June, continuing a tradition that has become a valued fixture in the commercial calendar.

What has never changed is the purpose behind it: bringing together likeminded people for an engaging lunch in a quality setting, and creating the space for conversations that really matter. In a world where so much interaction happens online, this event is a powerful reminder of the enduring value of face-to-face networking. Time around the table allows for more than catching up, it helps build trust, deepen relationships and open up the kinds of conversations that are often the most valuable: understanding what clients are dealing with, what challenges are shaping their decisions, and how we can best support them. Research and industry commentary continue to highlight that in-person networking strengthens trust, communication and long-term professional relationships.

James Rigby, consultant partner in our commercial property management team, said: “In an ever-changing market, constantly shaped by social, economic, and financial factors, these conversations are vital in helping us understand how best we can support our clients. We also know that our clients enjoy meeting each other in this friendly, informal, environment and, over the years, this lunch has sparked countless ideas, opportunities and collaborations.”

James Harrop-Griffiths, Partner and National Head of Asset Management, added: “There is real power in networking face to face. Bringing people together in person creates stronger relationships, better conversations and a level of connection that is hard to replicate in any other setting.

“From 10 attendees in its first year to around 130 today, the growth of the event says a great deal about the power of connection, consistency and shared conversation. Its continued success is not only a reflection of its history, but of its purpose: building relationships, understanding clients’ needs and challenges, and making space for the critical conversations that matter most.”
