Safe Digging Week 01

National Safe Digging Week, running from 7–13 July, shines a spotlight on the importance of working together to protect people and infrastructure. This year’s theme, ‘collaboration’ resonates deeply with the mission of our joint venture partner, LSBUD (LinesearchbeforeUdig), whose purpose is clear: safe digging for all.

LSBUD’s free-to-use online service helps locate underground assets across the UK, empowering operatives to plan safely and responsibly. But collaboration doesn’t mean passing the buck, it means shared responsibility. Every asset owner, contractor, and operative have a role to play in ensuring that everyone goes home safely.

The newly released Digging Up Britain 2025 report reinforces this message. While total searches dipped slightly to 3.86 million in 2024, the quality of those searches improved, with 77.8% linked to planned works, evidence of a growing culture of proactive safety. LSBUD’s network now spans over 2 million kilometres of underground infrastructure, with nine new members joining in 2024, including major telecoms and energy providers.

Yet challenges remain. A third of the UK’s underground assets are still unmapped, and incidents involving electrical and gas strikes are on the rise. The true cost of a utility strike, 29 times the direct repair cost, underscores the need for vigilance and collaboration.

Collaboration was on full display at the recent Damage Prevention Day 2025, held on 19 June at St. George’s Park. The event brought together industry leaders to share insights, innovations, and real-life lessons. From keynote sessions on wellbeing and human factors to powerful personal stories and the presentation of the National Safe Digging Awards (“The Larries”), the day celebrated the strength of working together.

Looking ahead, with the Government’s NUAR (National Underground Asset Register) progressing through Parliament as part of the June 2025 Data (Use and Access) Bill, industry collaboration is more vital than ever. While the goals of improving safety, efficiency, and collaboration are clear, voices like LSBUD stress the need for a system that’s practical, inclusive, and grounded in real-world needs.

Laura Knight, Head of Marketing and Business Operations at LSBUD, and a partner in Infrastructure Consultancy team, said: “National Safe Digging Week is a powerful reminder that collaboration is the cornerstone of damage prevention. When the industry works together, we create a safer environment for everyone. It’s not just about sharing data; it’s about sharing responsibility.”
