Ben’s early career story shows how flexible life at Fisher German can be. Joining as a graduate surveyor, after gaining a Geography degree at Liverpool University, in September 2024, he has already moved teams and offices to follow what interests him most, showing you don’t have to take a single, fixed path to build a career here.
Ben is currently based in Manchester, working across our telecoms and sustainability teams, and regularly spends time in Liverpool and other offices depending on project needs. Alongside his role, he is completing a master’s degree and working towards his professional qualifications, with a goal of passing his APC (Assessment of Professional Competence) in 2027.
A career journey shaped by flexibility
Ben chose us after hearing positive feedback from people he trusted. “It was actually the first graduate job I applied for, and I felt very valued from the start.”
He began his graduate career in our Infrastructure team in Banbury, an experience he describes as a strong grounding, with plenty of support and opportunities to learn. But Ben’s story also shows that early careers at Fisher German isn’t about being “locked in” to your first role.
After around 18 months, Ben spotted an opportunity that better matched both his interests and where he wanted to build his life: a graduate role in our telecoms and sustainability teams based in Manchester. “I immediately enquired and met with my new manager to discuss the role and both my old and new teams helped make the transition as smooth as possible.”
The move to the North West was a big step. He grew up in a small village called Tysoe, near Stratford upon Avon but now lives in Liverpool. Ben enjoys the Liverpool and Manchester area, but the move also brought him closer to work he is genuinely passionate about. After studying geography and writing his dissertation on climate change, renewable energy is a sector that particularly interests him. For anyone considering joining Fisher German, his message is simple: there are lots of ways to find the right fit, and the business can support you to move offices and teams as your interests, and circumstances, evolve.
There isn’t really a normal day
Ask Ben what a typical day looks like, and he’ll tell you there isn’t one, especially when you are learning quickly and taking on new experiences. In just a short time in his new role, he has worked from offices including Manchester, Liverpool, London, Birmingham, Market Harborough and Ashby; attended a data centres conference; joined site meetings; and taken part in an early careers day, and a team away day at Stratford Racecourse. On top of that, he is in Cirencester for university one day a week while he completes his master’s in Rural Land and Estate Management.
A bit more about Ben
We asked Ben a few quick-fire questions to get to know him a little better:
What do you enjoy outside of work? “Outside of work, sport has always been a big part of my life. I play tennis and rugby, but football has always been my favourite. I’m a Liverpool FC fan and try to get to Anfield whenever I can, if I can’t get a ticket, watching the match in the city is a good Plan B.”
How would you describe yourself outside of work? “I’m also big on music and food, and I’m always up for a dog walk to catch up with friends or family which, more often than not, ends up in a pub garden.”
What did you want to be when you were younger? “When I was younger, I was absolutely set on being Steve Irwin, so I suppose I wanted to be some sort of crocodile hunter! My mum wasn’t too keen on the idea of me running around trying to catch crocodiles, so we settled on a zookeeper as the safer option.”
What are you most proud of? “One of my proudest achievements is completing my Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award and collecting it from Prince Edward at Buckingham Palace. And socially, winning the Golden Boot and Player of the Season in the same year for my university football team was a real highlight.”
So, what stands out about Fisher German?
“One of the biggest things I’ve noticed is how much we focus on client care. It’s about building long-term relationships and trust, doing great work, communicating well, and making sure clients feel looked after.”
“It’s also a really exciting time to join because the business is growing. New people bring new ideas and different perspectives, sometimes the only challenge is finding enough desk space!”
“And for me personally, the way the business supports its people was shown in how straightforward my move was. I was able to change team and office, and both my old and new teams helped make the transition as smooth as possible. That flexibility makes a huge difference, especially early in your career when you’re still figuring out what you enjoy most.”
Ben’s advice for anyone starting out
Ben’s advice is to stay open, get involved, and back yourself: “Do what makes you happy and take every opportunity that comes your way. Say yes to every company event, networking social or client conference as you never know who you might meet.”
Looking ahead, Ben’s focused on achieving his APC and continuing to progress in the business over the coming years, ultimately with ambitions to be successful on our Pathway to Ownership within the business. His journey so far is a reminder that your career can move with you: across projects, across teams, and even across the country.
