Further phase planning gained for University of Bedfordshire

September 2011

planning & construction news

Following the planning permission granted for a new Postgraduate and CPD Centre for the University of Bedfordshire, the planning team at Fisher German has received planning permission for a further phase of the University’s masterplan comprising the overcladding of two, five storey academic buildings.

The University continues to be committed to the creation of a high quality and sustainable campus, accessible to all, and is keen to implement the proposed masterplan changes which will include significant enhancement to its current building stock, and to the streets and squares within and around the Luton campus.

The proposed overcladding is a further stage of University investment in its campus which will complement other town centre and University regeneration developments in the vicinity, and will also include the replacement of most glazing and perforated metal panels to provide solar shading. It is proposed to be complete for the start of the 2012/13 academic year 2012 to tie with the opening of the new Postgraduate and CPD Centre.

The overcladding will result in low energy and passive strategies which have been included in order to reduce demands on the HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning) systems, as well as the reuse of existing structures in a highly accessible town centre location. These include:

  • High insulation standards
  • Triple glazing with good U-value (insulation) and G-value (solar absorption) performance
  • Reduction in exposed glazing proportion, with solar shading
  • Improved standards of air tightness
The context of the locality is one of new buildings with a variety of different, yet complementary finishes. The current H and J Blocks potentially create a situation where the unity of the campus is weakened in an urban context that itself displays a lack of cohesion. The approved consent allows for the overclad of the buildings in a palette which reflects the materials of the Phase 1B building (Campus Centre).
