Fisher German is continuing to support students through its placement scheme, with 12-month placements on offer to university students looking to progress into the utilities, rural and commercial sectors.

Those undertaking a placement are fully integrated into the team, with their own workload and involvement in working with and advising clients.

They are also invited to join our graduate training programme for the year, providing them with the same training opportunities and APC (Assessment of Professional Competence) support given to graduates within the firm.

Our placement scheme is led by Fisher German partner Ruth Ofield. She said:

“Our placement scheme is a fantastic opportunity for students to develop their skills in an industry setting. They are fully involved with client work and are given a certain level of responsibility right from the start, which increases throughout the duration of the placement.

“The students are treated the same as any full-time member of staff. They are encouraged to join in with team building and social events, and are given the same training opportunities as our graduates during their year with us. Being a multi-disciplinary firm means that we are also able to provide experience in different departments, where appropriate, should the student wish to learn about something in particular.

“We often make graduate job offers on the back of placements – they act as a job interview for both parties, with the student getting to know what work they enjoy and us seeing what capabilities they have. Having offices across the country puts us in an excellent position to support students, providing them with a vast amount of experience that they can put into practice during their final year of study and beyond.”

We have received an incredibly high standard of feedback from students on placement with us, including those we welcomed to our utilities team last year.

James Butlin, from Warwickshire, joined the firm’s Market Harborough office.

“I have thoroughly enjoyed my placement with Fisher German, the whole team has been very welcoming and sociable. I have mainly been working with one of the firm’s large utilities clients facilitating land access.

“It’s been a fantastic opportunity for me to put what I have learnt at university into practice, and I have developed skills that will help me in my final year at university and beyond. The placement has also given me the chance to find out more about the other sectors covered by Fisher German, enabling me to broaden my experience further.”

Lucinda Gent, from Newark, undertook a placement at our Worcester office.

“It was a very well-rounded placement and I was given quite a lot of responsibility relatively quickly which was excellent. Not only did I undertake work for one of the firm’s major energy clients, I was also able to gain some experience in estate management. I was also invited to the firm’s graduate days which really made me feel part of the team.

“The whole team was hugely supportive with both the work I was doing but also the APC side, providing advice and reviewing paperwork. They have also offered to provide ongoing support with my dissertation should I need it.”

Florence Gilman, from Tamworth, joined our Stafford office for her placement.

“I’ve really enjoyed my placement and it was an excellent opportunity to work on projects from start through to finish. I was mainly working with one of the firm’s large utilities clients on a scheme in Birmingham, and although I initially began by shadowing Fisher German colleagues, I was quickly given my own responsibilities.

“I have really improved my knowledge and also received a lot of APC support so I feel a lot more prepared for my exams.”

Josh Burrows, from Lancashire, completed his placement in our Ashby office.

“I found my placement really interesting and I gained all of the experience I hoped to. I worked within the utilities team assisting our utility clients with land management, but was also able to gain slight experience with the rural team to broaden my placement experience.

“I expressed an interest in auctioneering so was given the opportunity to do some work around a machinery auction which was brilliant and gave me an insight into different aspects of the business. I was given a lot of responsibility dealing with clients and being out on-site and I had free-reign to come up with ideas which I was then able to discuss with my line manager. I have certainly gained a lot of experience and was able to gain more of an idea about the different career opportunities available in the industry.”

Gabriella Bennion, from Leicestershire, joined our Market Harborough office for her placement.

“My placement with Fisher German was fantastic, working in a mixed utilities and rural team gave me the opportunity to gain a good range of experience. I mainly worked on the rural side on a selection of estates Fisher German look after, I enjoyed learning about the unique nature of each estate and the challenges they face today.

“I also liked being given responsibility over tasks involved with the day to day running of the estates, and being able to put the skills I have learnt so far at university into practise. I found Fisher German an excellent firm to work for and am really pleased I had the opportunity to complete my placement with them.”
