Gas hazard leads to village evacuation

September 2012

pipeline incident

The village of Fillingham in Lincolnshire had to be evacuated this week because of a serious leak caused when a gas main was damaged by a contractor.  Fortunately, no-one was injured but road diversions were set up around the village and four families had to leave their homes for safety.

A 600m exclusion zone was put in place by the fire brigade whilst National Grid engineers worked to make the fractured gas main safe.

This highlights precisely the type of incident our utilities and infrastructure team work hard to prevent and is a warning of the potentially fatal consequences if health and safety procedures are not adhered to.

Yesterday’s launch of Linesearchbeforeudig represents another step forward in providing the information contractors need to make sure these types of incident can be avoided.
