Light work made of Spring Hill Solar Scheme

March 2012

renewable energy news

Spring Hill Office Park has added solar PV to their award winning office premises. The Office Park, set in 50 acres of beautiful countryside in Pitsford Northamptonshire, is only 7 miles from junction 2 of the A14 (A1/M1 link).

The Spring Hill Solar PV scheme is now fully operational and is immediately returning benefits for the tenants and landlord.

Landlord Mark Adams comments “this is a 200 x 240W polycrystalline panel scheme. The installation was carried out by Environmental Energies Ltd who were recommended to me by Fisher German Chartered Surveyors. The installation was carried out very professionally with no hiccups. We have a solar display panel mounted outside on the wall so that the tenants and I can monitor at any minute the output and carbon saving.”

The 200 X 240W polycrystalline panels are made by CETC Ltd and have a 25 year warranty. Three Samil Solar Lake 1700TL inverters made by Samil Power have a 10 year warranty and are backed by Chubb. The solar display on the outside of the wall displays three figures a) instant kW output updated constantly, b) accumulated total kW hours, c) accumulated carbon saving in kilos.

The benefits to tenants and owner are numerous;

 Benefits to tenants Benefits to landlord
15 - 20% of electricity consumed is coming from Spring Hill’s Solar PV scheme. This helps boost the tenants’ environmental credentials. Helps with the continued good working relationship with tenants.
Good PR for tenants to communicate environmental positives to their customers. An added USP for Spring Hill Office Park.
No capital outlay for tenants. Helps to keep the units full and occupied.
No extra charges that would have been incurred through buying in 15 - 20% green electricity. All electricity will be consumed onsite. Replacing bought in electricity.
Tenants will be charged the cheapest ‘bought in’ unit prices. The scheme was installed prior to 03 March 2012 and will qualify for the higher Feed in Tariff rate.
Helps tenants meet possible future renewable sources obligations and legislation.
The capital cost of the project was offset against taxable income under the Annual Investment Allowance.

The Spring Hill Solar PV scheme is mounted on the roofs of the converted office premises, which were once large agricultural buildings. The panels are south facing and an added benefit is that the panels help with heat protection on the south facing roof. Planning approval took the normal two to three months. The panels have a 48kW capacity and returns expected are in the region of 10 - 12%, however it is early days.
