July 2011

planning & construction news

The planning team at Fisher German's Ashby office has achieved planning permission for a 4,000m², five storey academic building on behalf of the University of Bedfordshire.

The new building which comprises an exciting and unique building, designed by architects RMJM, will provide facilities for postgraduate students and alongside a centre for continuing professional development (CPD) students from industry in a scheme valued at a total of £20 million.

Due to open in early 2013, the new Postgraduate and Continuing Professional Development Centre will be built on the site of the former Students' Union building along Vicarage Street, Luton. It will house state-of-the-art teaching space, conference and computer rooms alongside a lounge, cafe, games room and external landscaping. The development comprises the third phase of the University's masterplan for its Luton Campus.

The highly sustainable building is anticipated to achieve the Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method (BREEAM) Excellent certification, and includes 300m² high efficiency mono-crystalline photovoltaics mounted at an incline of 10° on the plant room roof and 2 heat pumps providing 263kW of heating and 228kW of cooling, served by a ground source borehole system. These technologies will offset in excess of 20% of the carbon emissions of the building.

The Development Control Committee of Luton Borough Council voted unanimously to approve the application on Wednesday 08 June 2011.
