Fisher German document condition of East Midlands schools

October 2012

planning & construction news

Building surveyors at Fisher German LLP have commenced work documenting the condition of all state schools in the East Midlands on behalf of the Education Funding Agency (EFA).

The project is part of the EFA’s wider scheme to record the condition of all schools throughout England and Wales over the next 12 to18 months. Fisher German, as part of UKBS Plc, will be working with lead consultants Davis Landon Aecom who are responsible for recording the condition of schools in the West Midlands and the North West of England.

Richard Benson, head of Planning and Construction at Fisher German, comments on this recent instruction. “Our surveyors will undertake high level condition surveys of all school buildings in the region. The condition of the respective schools, together with other relevant asset management information, is recorded onsite using iPads. As the surveys are completed the data is automatically transferred to a web based portal. This methodology makes great use of information technology, allowing us to maximise surveying time, thereby reducing costs and providing value for our client.

“This is a major undertaking and we had to increase our initial resource shortly after the commission commenced in order to satisfy the EFA’s programme requirements. Experienced architectural technician Steve Nicholson and building surveyor Tom Barton are now supported by Andrew Prideaux on this project. Indications are that further surveying support will be required from Fisher German’s Building Consultancy team during late 2012 and into 2013.”

Andrew joined Fisher German recently and is currently working towards full RICS qualification. However, his previous experience working in the education sector, both as a consultant and on behalf of a national contractor, his involvement with multi-site projects and his varied experience on condition survey work will, no doubt, serve him well. Following his initial training/introduction, it is anticipated that Andrew will take the lead role on this project.
