Government to consult on farming change of use

March 2012

planning & construction news

The Government has confirmed plans to consult on proposals which will allow greater flexibility for changes of use of existing agricultural buildings for other business purposes, for example offices, leisure and retail space.

The commitment to the consultation forms part of DEFRA's response to the proposals from the Farm Regulation Task Force to cut the red tape faced by farmers.

Whilst consultation will be undertaken on greater flexibility for changes of use to existing agricultural buildings, the Government has decided not to accept the Task Force’s recommendations to relax planning controls for some farm development, including some buildings, polytunnels and winter-fill reservoirs.

The timetable for consultation is not yet known.
