Log cabin classrooms for a greener education

04/11/2008

cabinA school in the heart of Malvern is going one step further in helping nursery children to enjoy learning and develop their environmental skills by teaching pupils in a ‘log cabin’.

The Fisher German building consultancy team acted as framework consultants to Worcestershire County Council and have been working on the scheme since summer 2007. They have developed the building from the initial design stage, though to planning and tender and the project is now about to embark on the construction phase

The 216 sq m building, which was granted planning permission on the 8 July 2008, is the first educational ‘log-cabin’ structure in Worcestershire. The school is hoping to turn the project into a ‘real-time’ learning experience, involving its development, from milling the logs in Estonia to construction on-site. The school will monitor the longer term benefits of teaching in a ‘natural’ environment, now that ‘Forest School’ status has been achieved.

Richard Vincent of Fisher German comments: “log structures are becoming more and more popular in terms of providing sustainable and energy efficient structures in commercial settings, especially in the current economical and political climate”.
