'Difficult' is perhaps the best description of the market through the summer, but there is a market and good quality rural properties are holding their value and are selling.
Priesthay Wood Farmhouse, Syresham, Northamptonshire. Guide: £1,200,000.00
Clearly the market has not collapsed as some had predicted and as a result, in late summer, confidence rose with more viewings and more general activity. What is sometimes difficult is to convert general activity to actual sales.
It is also difficult to read the market, some properties selling quite well, quite quickley and others stuggling for much longer.
What happens now will depend on the outlook for the general economy. On the one hand retailers, in particular, are suffering from reduced consumer spending which is generating concern about a knock-on effect on the economy as a whole. On the other hand profits and city bonuses are still being generated. Some sity bonuses are still being penetrated. Some sity bonuses look for homes in the country!
