Ding-ding round 4 … cash for bio-energy

miscanthusThis is not a reference to boxing but a signal that the fourth round of the Bio-energy Capital Grants Scheme is well underway, having been launched on 9 April 2008.

Subsidised jointly by Defra and BERR (Department for Business Enterprise & Regulatory Reform) out of the UK Environmental Transformation Fund (ETF), there is a £4 million fund for the year 2008-09 to support the installation of biomass-fuelled heating and combined heat and power projects, including anaerobic digesters.

The scheme is not intended for individuals or householders (who should consider the Low Carbon Buildings Programme) but instead applications are sought from the industrial, commercial and community sectors. Encompassing public and private limited companies, applications can also be made by farms and stately homes.

In a recent statement, climate change minister, Phil Woolas, said: “As almost half of our CO2 emissions are the result of heating buildings or water, switching our dependence on fossil fuels to more energy efficient equipment makes sense.”

He hopes that this funding for the installation of biomass-fuelled heating boilers and combined heat and power plants will make a considerable difference.

There will be a variable rate up to a maximum of 40% of the difference in cost compared with the installation of the fossil fuel alternative. The maximum single award will be £100,000 per installation whilst there is no minimum.

Applications must be made by 20 May 2008.
