The National Forest covers 200 square miles across parts of Staffordshire, Leicestershire and Derbyshire. In the last ten years seven million trees have been planted and woodland cover has nearly trebled. The Tender Scheme remains closed whilst proposals for a replacement scheme are being considered in Europe.
However, this does not restrict the opportunities for planting trees within the forest this year. There are three schemes still available to those within the National Forest Boundary.
The National Forest Company are offering the opportunity to have a woodland designed, planted and maintained for 18 months providing that the planting is voluntary, it is completed by 31 March 2008 and between 500 and 2000 trees are planted.
For those smaller landowners within the forest, the National Forest Company can provide up to 420 broadleaved trees with canes and guards free of charge. These are then planted and maintained by the landowner.
The National Forest Company can offer up to 50% grant aid towards the cost of gapping up hedges, planting orchards or creating parklands.
