DEFRA improves Whole Farm Approach database

20/11/2007

wfaThe latest improvements to DEFRA's recently implemented web based system, known as the Whole Farm Approach (WFA) has been released this week.

The WFA has been designed and implemented by DEFRA and the NFU who are hoping to simplify the way farmers carry out business and reduce the amount of red tape currently affecting the industry.

The on line service is aiming to provide farmers and growers with a central information point to access latest up-to-date information, guidance and related agency information. The WFA will allow farmers to evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of their farming business by benchmarking themselves against similar farming systems. Additionally the online service will allow farmers and growers to register for any waste exemption licences, agricultural surveys, soil protection reviews and alert farmers to any up to date news on current farming issues.

There will however be concerns by farmers and agents alike as to the competence of DEFRA supplying yet another IT based programme but if successful the WFA should offer farmers and growers the opportunity to demonstrate good agricultural practice, save time completing records and reduce the risk of cross compliance inspections.
