With 3G technologies failing to take off as expected in the UK the telecoms industry has been hit hard. Cost cutting exercises within the industry have seen Vodafone and Orange enter into a joint venture deal to combine their networks, which will effectively create a single 3G network accessible by their customers. Whilst the logistics of this deal are still to be worked out it is expected that there will be a certain level of rationalisation within their networks in a bid to cut operating costs. Put simply, the two operators will be looking to reduce the number of base station sites across the UK. Talks also appear to be happening between T-Mobile and Hutchison 3G, the culmination of which has yet to be seen.
Whilst the telecoms market is no stranger to peaks and troughs, the lack of further investment in the industry and development of the infrastructure is leading to large scale redundancies. In a bid to reduce rents paid for base station sites, operators are increasingly resorting to hard line negotiations with referral to 3rd party for independent determination becoming commonplace. Landlords are now being faced with tough decisions over seeking higher rents which can be greatly eased by employing an agent to act on their behalf. With a database of over 3000 sites Fisher German are in an excellent position to negotiate the best deals, whether it is for new sites, rent reviews, lease renewals, lift and shift or dispute resolution work.
