Watch out! There's a pipeline about

08/06/2007

pipelineFarmers, landowners and contractors could potentially save millions by carrying out a simple online check to discover where pipelines and fibre optic apparatus run under their land prior to commencing construction work.

Linesearch.org will be demonstrated at this year’s Royal Show, thanks to chartered surveyors Fisher German. The free to use system offers users a centralised information resource which provides a thorough check on underground pipelines and other apparatus.

“This online information tool alerts landowners and contractors to the vast network of underground utilities that could impact on potential above ground construction,” explains Andrew Bridge from Fisher German.    “Linesearch is complemented by a partner organisation, called Linewatch, which provides advice and presentations to third parties wishing to learn about the complex issues surrounding the structure of underground utilities which run the length of the country.”

Linesearch has among its members BPA, BT GEO, BP, TSEP, Conoco Phillips, Esso, Government Pipeline and Storage System, Sabic UK, Mainline, Manchester Jetline Ltd, Shell, Scottish Power Generation Ltd and ConocoPhillips Humber Refinery.  The total length of pipeline and fibre optic apparatus covered on this service now exceeds 8,000kms.

Currently receiving up to 1,700 enquiries a day, the site enables the enquirer to establish whether their proposed construction works would impact on the members’ apparatus.

Similarly, Linewatch is a joint initiative between Fisher German and Esso Petroleum Co Ltd, BP, E-ON, Shell, Mainline Pipelines Ltd, BPA, Total, ConocoPhillips, Sabic UK, The Oil and Pipelines Agency (Government Pipelines and Storage System) and Manchester Jetline Ltd.  Between them, the 11 participants account for some 5,725km of buried oil/gas pipelines in England, Wales and Scotland.
