New measures to reduce the spread of TB have been introduced with effect from 1 March 2007. Cattle over 42 days are now required to be tested for bovine tuberculosis before being moved.
It is hoped that the new testing on younger cattle will help to reduce the spread of TB between herds and to unaffected areas. All cattle over 42 days moving to different holdings must test negative to a TB test within 60 days before being moved away from herds that have been tested once every year or once every two years.
All farmers must arrange and meet the costs of pre-movement testings. Testings which have been carried out by the government qualify for the pre-movement tests. Fisher German advises that farmers should ensure that they have proof that the stock they are bringing onto their farm has been pre-movement tested. If cattle have not been tested the farmer must arrange for the animals to be isolated immediately and a post movement test carried out.
Fisher German advises that the TB pre-movement testing is required under Statutory Management Requirement 11 (Food and Feed Law) and if pre-movement tests are not carried out a breach of cross compliance has occurred and it is likely that the Single Farm Payment will be put at risk.
