Reduce your waste before the ban

Charles Meynell
16/03/2006 Charles Meynell BSc FRICS FAAV Partner Charles heads the Stafford Office and has a wide range of professional experience.

effluentFrom December 2005 the regulations will ban large scale burning of waste on bonfires, burial of waste in farm tips and burial of asbestos.

Registration for an exemption to dispose of waste on farm or reuse will have to be done by Decmber 2006.

The Environment Agency is likely to use the first year to give advice and education; enforcement will take effect after that.

Compliance with the regulations is likely to form part of the cross complaince procedures under the Single Payment Scheme and lending institutions will look to compliance when considering secured lending.

We are advising all farmers to take action now to reduce the volume of waste on the farm, including asbestos, plastic and tyre disposal.  We are also urging our clients to cease using farm tips, cover them with soil and record the position as this information will be required should the farm be sold at some date in the future.

As to the future, we are working to review our clients' method of operation to reduce the volume of waste produced and improve the storage of waste materials to reduce the cost of recycling.
