ViewThe Draft East Midlands Regional Spatial Strategy (RSS8) has been issued for consultation with representations due by 20th December 2006.  Kay Davis, head of the planning team at Ashby points out, “This document will direct development to 2026 and in particular provides figures for housing and employment development over the next 20 years.  The document will feed into the new Local Development Frameworks at district/borough council level.  RSS8 replaces all Structure Plans in the East Midlands.”

The following ‘New Growth Points’ are identified for the region:

• The ‘Three Cities’ of Derby, Leicester and Nottingham
• Lincoln
• Grantham
• Newark

Within the Three Cities key growth areas identified are:

• Expansion to the south of Derby (within South Derbyshire District)
• Expansion to the south of Nottingham (major development in Clifton)
• Expansion to the north or Leicester (Thurmaston) and to the west (Blaby District)
• Major development/expansion of Loughborough, Hinckley and Coalville
• Other urban extensions to Harborough, Melton, Swadlincote, Alfreton, Belper Heanor, Ripley, Kimberly, Eastwood and Ilkeston

In addition to the above there is considerable growth in Northamptonshire, which has already been progressed by a separate Milton Keynes and South Midlands Sub-Regional Strategy.   This includes significant growth at Northampton, Corby, Kettering, Wellingborough and Daventry.

You may have a strategic site that is on the fringe of the one of the above urban areas and clearly it is important to protect its development potential.  If you require any further information or wish to discuss the planning potential of a site, please contact the Planning Team at Ashby on 01530 412821
