Margaret Beckett gave a glimmer of hope to farmers who are still anxiously waiting payments for last years single payment, as she announced in the commons on the 19th April that the RPA is now working on making ‘substantial partial payments to farmers as soon as possible'.
She continued that ‘as at the 18th April 47,033 claims representing 39% of the claimants have been paid a total of £362.23 million'.
Worryingly she went onto say that the acting chief executive has informed her that he does not feel confident that he can say with complete assurance that the RPA will be able to make all of the full payments by the end of June.
Matthew Allen of Rural Property Consultants, Fisher German comments that ‘this does provide some hope to farmers who are desperate to receive some form of payment’ but he observed that ‘those in the tenanted sector are those most worried and desperate for the cash, with landlords demanding rent to be paid that was due in March. There is the danger in some cases that the landlords may wish to exercise their ability to serve notices to quit on their tenants for failure to pay rent’.
